![]() This selection of photographs is presented here to give viewers a sense of what it was like to have been present on October 26th, 2002, the day of what has been called the largest Peace March since those held in protest of the war in Vietnam. There are varying estimates regarding the number of participants in attendance, I myself was able to park directly in front of the White House in the early morning light when the attendance seemed to be much less than would be needed to get the Nation's attention. By that afternoon, however, there was a mighty throng of protesters - perhaps over two hundred thousand - passionately responding to the spirited speeches and waving their banners. I don't know that even that was enough to get the Nation's attention, because the mainstream media chose to completely ignore the event, giving it scant coverage if any. I hope that my small contribution of this photo tour can help to make up for that in some fashion. One of the things that I like about it is that it provides a look at many of the hand-painted signs expressing concern, anger, outrage, humor, compassion, patriotic dissent and pride. Because each sign was individually created by the person carrying it, it represents the authentic statement of each citizen emphasized by that person's commitment to travel many miles (often from distant states) to carry it. I realize that many who felt deeply called to be part of this momentous event were not able to make it and I am happy to be able to show you a bit of what you would otherwise never be able to see. I hope it inspires you to renew your dedication, to take an active participation in creating a better world, and to reinvigorate a democracy that is truly reflective of the will of the governed. Much is still needing to be done. I hope that everyone takes heart at the enthusiasm and temerity displayed by the people in these photographs. I personally do not believe that the present military conflicts are merely about oil. I think there is far, far more to the story and that it is very important that each American look beyond the headlines and rely instead upon their own discernment and intelligence. A very different story will emerge for those who have the courage and persistence to find it. I wish you well on your journey and that your efforts may be fruitful.
