Iceland
Iceland is the home of my soul. It's not tropical, sunny, warm or even particularly comfortable, and yet it is extremely compelling in a way that I can't fully explain. Iceland is the youngest land formation on the planet. It's extremely geologically active, has active volcanoes, hot springs, geysers (the very word is Icelandic), and lava flows. Like Greenland, it has no trees, a short arctic summer under the midnight sun, and is breeding ground to millions of migrating seabirds (including puffins) who nest on the incredible thick green, green moss that rolls and pillows across the jagged, windswept rocks.

Icelanders are Vikings, and still speak the ancient language of the sagas (another Icelandic word). Their character is akin to their beautiful, proud and elemental homeland. They are as hardy as the famed Icelandic horse and are reputed to have the most beautiful women in the world. Iceland also has Europe's largest icecaps (Vatnajokull) and most powerful waterfalls (Detifoss), and has great chasms filled with incredibly blue water that mark where the earth itself is splitting in two. (This is at Thingvellir, where the continental plates are moving apart. You can literally stand with one foot in Europe and one foot in North America). Never have I been in a place where I have felt the presence of the elemental beings so strongly.
