 About Me
Pictures of me!
I'm going to assume that most people who visit this site know me, but for those of you who don't, my name is Scott Fray. I was born in Detroit area Michigan, on December 29th, 1964. I lived in Southfield, Fenton, and Flint, MI respectively. I went to college at The Center for Creative Studies in Detroit for illustration. After a brief stay in San Diego (Chula Vista), I moved to North Carolina, which is where I presently live and have lived since 1990. I own a 1889 Victorian home with six fireplaces, three porches, and stained glass, etc., that I have done a lot of work to. I was a bit lucky in that the house came with two extra lots, adding a fair amount of space to my already largish corner lot in Reidsville's downtown historic district. I also have peach, plum, pecan, mulberry and walnut trees in the yard. I do like the house, but sometimes I really can't stand living in a tiny little town in the south. So, I like to travel a lot. You can check out some of my adventures in the Travel section.
My Work as an Artist
The picture at right is of me at my old (self employed) job. For six years I had a shop at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. I sold artwork of various kinds, transitioning into silk painting and dying. My shop is still there, tended by my old friend and business partner Yvette, and it's now called "Silk Road". Stop in and say hello if you're ever there. Every thing I did and created for the festival, all the crafts, plus costumes, signage, building architecture, etc., had to be in the style of the sixteenth century. I excelled in a couple of these areas, winning awards for costuming (albino peacock feathers and all) and signage.
I've always made my living as a commercial artist. Screenprinting, sign painting, large-scale outdoor murals, etc. gave way to advertising work once I moved to NC. I don't have to starve anymore, but I've worked such stupidly long hours for years and years at advertising agencies, it now seems like I've blinked and ten years have gone by. I'm single and I don't have children, nor do I recommend either of those if you're going to work in advertising- you just can't have a life. Still interested? Check out my Resume. You can see a lot of my professional work in my online portfolio at www.scottfray.com
I've consistently tried different things, often leaving the lucrative money of advertising to try to pick up skills that would give me the power to create big original projects. Yes, I have a real maverick streak as well as being entrepreneurial and a workaholic. I've done CD-ROM development. some TV and movies, children's book projects. I've been in involved in a number of large scale projects but I have had very little success in getting these to market. That has left me with a backlog of extensive projects that no one will ever see! Of course, I would rather have it otherwise, and, in part, this website is a venue for me to share some of that work.
At the moment, I have made a career change. After an exceptional year, the economic currents shifted to the other extreme and I was left with the feeling that I had to radically reassess my skill set and my approach. I did some research, and found an emergent web technology that blew me away. I knew I could learn it, and I took three months off to do just that. Now I have released a site that is not only exciting, but very advanced. (www.IdeactionMedia.com) At this writing, there are only a small handful of people in the world with a site anywhere near mine. Now I just have to get noticed by the right people. Wish me luck!
Near to my Heart
What is it that really motivates me? From whence do I derive my passion for living? I am, and have always been, fascinated by the life of the spirit. I am rabidly fascinated by all aspects of consciousness exploration, metaphysics, comparative religions, magick, shamanic experience, philosophy, evolutionary and cultural anthropology, etc. To get a taste for this, check out my article on Heket.
I have gone all over the world to learn about these things, spent almost ten years studying with Dr. Jean Houston in New York, spent a while at a Thelemic Abbey, been involved in the magickal community and had a lot of great adventures to learn, explore and further my growth and understanding. I often feel full-to-bursting with these ideas and am continually feeling the imperative to create works and communications that express these things.
Additional to that, I am more that a little bit futurist, visionary, and also a bit of a technocrat. I really do believe that we are living in an unprecedented period of growth and change in almost all facets of human life, societal, environmental, cultural, global, economic, technological, etc. Not only do I expect that everyone will bear witness to monumental changes in what it means to be human, but it's fun for me to enter into the "game of the age" as Jon Anderson put it, and be involved in the fields of both technology and the evolving international conversation on spiritual matters in so far as I am able to participate and contribute.
